Gemma puts on a beautiful performance

With mascara, eye shadow and lippy at the ready, Gemma Jones proved she’s a cut above when she was awarded third place at a regional beauty therapy competition at Coleg Sir Gar in April.

The 18-year-old from Pontypool, who is on a beauty therapy course at Coleg Gwent’s City of Newport Campus, came third out of 14 other competitors in the Advanced category of the UK Skills Beauty Therapy competition.  She was judged on a full range of skills.  Starting with an initial consultation with her client, Gemma then performed a body faradic treatment, which can aid muscle tone without exercise, a full body massage and a facial galvanic treatment.

Gemma loved the experience and is over the moon with second place:  “What an excellent opportunity to see the standard across the country and meet industry leaders who write the books we read and have made such a huge impact on us. Taking part in competitions drives you to succeed and work to the highest standard you possibly can. I want to be the best in industry and will continue to push myself to achieve that. I am so glad my tutor has seen the potential in me to be excellent and encouraged me to take part in this competition.”

Gemma’s tutor Emma Macmillan said:  “The standard was really high so this is a fabulous achievement for her.  We are proud, as she should be. Well done Gemma!”
