Commenting on the Environment Minister’s statement on the National Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management Strategy, Shadow Minister for Environment Russell George AM, said:
“I welcome the introduction of this strategy and I am pleased that the Welsh Labour Government has taken the relevant recommendations on board.
“Where this document falters is in its lack of innovative policy ideas, such as the development of ‘Blue Belt’ land.
“This scheme – put forward by the Welsh Conservatives – would ensure no development takes place on land close to lakes, rivers and coastlines. This is a common-sense approach that would put an end to irresponsible building and give added confidence to the insurance industry.
“Clarification is also required on both the monitoring and funding of this strategy, particularly given the extra pressures that will be placed upon local authorities”.
