George: Floods highlight need for improved strategy

Shadow Minister for Environment, Russell George AM, has praised the community spirit and hard work of all those affected by recent floods, and paid tribute to the resolve and determination of emergency services.

Speaking as a number of flood warnings and alerts remain in place across Wales, Mr George has also called for a rethink on Welsh Government strategy.

Earlier this year the Environment Minister confirmed the budget for coping with flooding and coastal erosion would be cut by 30 million pounds over the next four years.

Mr George said:

“The flooding we’ve seen over the last few days should act as a wake-up call for the Welsh Government.

“It is incumbent upon ministers to deal with the constant threat being posed and cutting the budget for dealing with the problem doesn’t make sense.

“Measures to prevent coastal flooding are crucial, along with a much-improved strategy to deal with the threat posed by inland waterways.

“Once again we have seen immense community spirit and incredible determination from all those affected by the floods or those tasked with dealing with the consequences.

“We now need to see a similar effort from ministers, who can make a real difference in developing the right strategy to alleviate the causes.”
