Get walking for Fairtrade Fortnight

Two walks are taking place across Cardiff as part of Fairtrade Fortnight.

Fairtrade Fortnight is an important event in the city’s diary, as Cardiff was the world’s first capital city to be given Fairtrade city status.

Fair trade guarantees a better deal for third world producers by paying a fair and consistent price that reflects the true cost of production, plus a premium that producers can invest in development.

The Fair Trade Cardiff partnership has been working to raise awareness of fair trade and to make fair trade goods more widely available across the city.

This year’s Fairtrade Fortnight is underway and will run until Sunday, March 11. As part of this the two walks are taking place which will take in various fair trade outlets across the city.

The first will be held this Wednesday (February 29) at 2pm in Canton. Walkers should meet at Chapter Art Centre, with the 2.1m walk taking about an hour and finishing back at Chapter.

The second walk is taking place in Roath on Saturday, March 10 at 10am. Walkers will meet at Albany Road Primary School with the 1.6 mile hour-long walk ending at the farmers market at the Mackintosh Centre on Keppoch Street.

Executive Member for Environment, Cllr Margaret Jones, said: “Cardiff became the first Fairtrade capital city in the World in 2004 and we are very proud of this achievement and actively promote fair trade and Fairtrade Fortnight.

“We are once again working closely with Fairtrade Wales to make sure there are plenty of celebrations taking place during Fairtrade Fortnight and these walks are a great way of getting involved, finding more about fair trade outlets in the city, while keeping fit at the same time.”
