Getting children on healthy track

A special course designed to help children who may be leading an unhealthy lifestyle is kicking off in Swansea from next week.

The 10 week MEND programme, which stands for Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do it, is a free course taking place at Bishop Gore School.

The course focuses on encouraging children and their families to lead a healthier lifestyle whilst having fun and is open to youngsters between the ages of 7 and 13 years old and their parents

The MEND programme and runs for two hours after school twice a week and the first session takes place on Monday.

Paul Whapham from Swansea Council’s Sports Development team said, “The course involves activities such as games and sport, along with nutritional tips for youngsters and their parents, such as portion size and healthy recipes.

“This is the fourth MEND course we’ve run in Swansea, and feedback from previous session has been very positive.

“The idea is not just about losing weight but helping young people stay healthy.”

There are spaces on the new course which starts on Monday so parents who are concerned that their child may be above a healthy weight are invited to get in touch.

Paul said, “If you are interested in helping your child to stay healthy then we’d be delighted to hear from you. We’ll check your child’s age, weight and health to see if they qualify.”
