Cardiff Council is sending out a fitness team to promote active healthy lifestyles amongst the city’s newest student population.
The squad have been picked from Western Leisure Centre and Maindy Centre, and will attend Freshers’ Week at the University of Wales Institute Cardiff (UWIC).
The team will be on hand to offer health and fitness advice and give tips and ideas on how to keep fit and active.
They will also bring a range of interactive equipment which people will be invited to try out themselves. This includes kettle bells, Trixter spin bikes, fit balls, loose weights and an interactive fitness coach with dance mats.
Throughout the week new students are encouraged to sign up and take advantage of a free group gym induction which will enable them to use one of the seven council gyms around the city.
The free inductions are available at Western Leisure Centre and Maindy Centre. They run from Tuesday September 21 and can be taken up until Sunday October 3.
Inductees will be shown how to use the gym equipment safely and effectively by a trained member of staff. They can also get useful advice about how to use their time in the gym most efficiently.
During the week students can take the opportunity to learn about Cardiff Council’s student discount membership. The Student Active Card is a no – monthly – payment scheme and can be used at all 11 council run sports and leisure facilities around the city and offers fulltime students, a discount of up to 50% off the price of casual leisure activities.
UWIC students union will also be offering new members special access to the facilities at Western Leisure Centre.
The centre boasts some of the most modern leisure facilities in Cardiff and students who sign up to the union during freshers’ week can enjoy the use of the gymnasium, swimming pool and main hall to use for activities such as football, basketball, and badminton.
They can also take advantage of a free bus service from UWIC Llandaff Campus to the centre for the sessions which will run on a Wednesday afternoon between 1pm – 5pm.
The 20 sessions run in 2 x 10 week blocks and will commence on October 6.
Executive Member for Culture Leisure and Sport, Nigel Howells, said: “Getting students active whilst they are studying in Cardiff is essential to ensuring we have a healthy generation of young people across the city. This is a fantastic opportunity to make health and fitness accessible to new students and show them what great sport and leisure facilities we have on offer here.”
The fitness team will be at the National Indoor Athletics Centre (NIAC) at Cyncoed on Monday 20 September and the UWIC Llandaff campus from Tuesday 21 through to Thursday 23 September, from 10am until 4pm each day.
