Two schools in Cardiff have been selected to make two huge sculptures -‘Giants of Wales’ to be a part of the St David’s Day parade which will be held in the city on March 1.
All Saints Church in Wales and Mount Stuart Primary will take part in a special workshop on Thursday, February 17 to create two figures to form part of the parade.
Pupils from the schools will decide which prominent figures from Welsh history, entertainment, sport, or politics will become their giant. The larger than life characters will then be paraded through the capital accompanied by the children who designed and made them.
Deputy Leader for Cardiff Council Cllr McEvoy Neil said: ”We really are stepping up the celebrations this years for St David’s Day to create an event of which Wales can be proud.
“The introduction of the ‘Giants of Wales’ to the parade is a great way to get younger people involved and excited about St David’s Day.
“Our intention is that it will become a regular addition to the parade, with each year different schools creating a new giant to go along with those already created.”
A week long celebration is planned for St David’s Day, with the highlight being the St David’s Day parade, The parade will leave City Hall at 12.30 and will proceed down Kingsway into Castle Street turning into St Mary Street then into Mill Lane and The Hayes before finishing in front of St David’s Hall at 1pm where there will be an hour of traditional music and entertainment until 2pm. There will also be a Welsh Craft Market.
