Gillan & Burns: Reassurances vital over future of Chevron refinery

Commenting on news that Chevron is looking for a buyer for its refinery in Pembroke, west Wales, Shadow Secretary of State for Wales Cheryl Gillan MP said:

“This is extremely worrying news. Every effort must be made to find a buyer for the Pembroke refinery and to protect local jobs.

“The Chevron refinery is a significant local employer and makes a major contribution to the local economy.

“The company must give every assurance to the local workforce that their jobs will not be put at risk.

“I am seeking an assurance from the UK Government that it is in discussions with the firm about the implications of this decision locally and nationally.

“I will also be discussing this with my Conservative colleague Angela Burns, the local Assembly Member, to ensure we are doing everything we can to protect investment and jobs.”

Angela Burns, Welsh Conservative AM for Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire, said:

“I have already spoken to Chevron to find out exactly what it has in mind for this important local employer.

“While I understand we are in the early days in this process I am concerned that workers will be put through months of uncertainty about their futures.

“The concern is not just about local jobs but also about the investment the company makes to the local economy and local infrastructure.

“We also need answers from the Deputy First Minister who recently visited Chevron in Pembroke.

“I have written to him seeking answers but have yet to receive a reply. This is too urgent an issue to dither over.”
