Boys will be ‘Well-Jel’ as girls are feeling ‘Reem’ after taking part in a new fitness programme specifically aimed at teenage girls.
The launch of the joint initiative between Sport.Cardiff and the Council’s Leisure Services has been dubbed ‘The Only Way is Fitness’ after the BAFTA award winning TV show ‘The Only Way is Essex’.
The project aims to encourage girls aged between 14 and 16 years to participate in physical activity. It also demonstrates the different fitness sessions available to them once they leave school.
The girls will partake in a variety of fitness sessions over a ten week course. Activities take place after school and will vary each week to allow the girls to experience different sports and activities such as spin, Zumba®, Box-a-cise and a Teenfit gym course.
Leisure centre staff have been identified as coaches and have completed a Kids Fitness qualification to enable them to take fitness sessions for the age group.
The 14 coaches are based at seven different centres across Cardiff covering all of the 20 secondary schools.
After the 10 week block, those classes identified by the girls as the most popular will be implemented within the Leisure Facilities at a community rate, so the girls can continue in their new found fitness programme.
Executive Member for Sport, Leisure and Culture, Cllr Nigel Howells said: “This new initiative is an excellent, forward thinking way to encourage girls to take up physical activity during their teenage years in the hope they will stay active into adulthood.
“It will bridge the gap between school and community participation in sports and will showcase what is on offer to the girls at their local leisure centres.
“We are committed to providing diverse sports and leisure activities to suit people of all ages and abilities so that people in Cardiff can enjoy a healthy lifestyle and well-being.”
The cost of the course is £10 per person. Girls who are interested in the scheme should see their school Sport.Cardiff 5X60 officer for information.
