Girls take to the pitch

Girls from across Pembrokeshire took to the field for an annual football tournament at the weekend.

Over 70 pupils from all eight of the County’s secondary schools competed in the second 5×60 Inter School Football competition in Tenby on Sunday.

The competition was made up of two groups with Greenhill and Ysgol y Preseli emerging as joint winners.

Organised by Sport Pembrokeshire – the sports development arm of Pembrokeshire County Council – the 5×60 project aims to encourage secondary school pupils to take part in extra curricular activities, while getting fit at the same time.

Councillor Rob Lewis, Cabinet Member for Sport and Leisure said 5×60 girls’ football clubs were now running in most of the County’s secondary schools.

“The introduction of activities such as girl’s football and street dance symbolise the changes that we are trying to make in secondary school sport. Girls football is an extremely popular 5×60 activity as shown by the turn out at Sunday’s competition.”

Russell Jones, 5×60 Manager for Sport Pembrokeshire, said football engaged large number of girls in healthy and regular exercise.

“The standard at the competition was very high and contestants and spectators thoroughly enjoyed themselves”.

Debbie Wise, Football Development Officer, said she hoped a large proportion of the girls would go on to play football for their local club.
