To celebrate World Book Day 2011, the Welsh Books Council and Welsh publishers have joined forces to offer fabulous books at fantastic prices that will make wonderful gifts for friends and family. Considerable discounts will be available for a limited period on a number of English and Welsh-language adult and children’s books.
World Book Day was designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and is marked in over 100 countries around the globe. The origins of the day we now celebrate in the UK and Ireland come from Catalonia, where roses and books were given as gifts to loved ones on World Book Day – a tradition started over 90 years ago.
The Welsh Books Council is encouraging everyone to give a book to someone, as we all need to read more, whether on our own or to our children. Elwyn Jones, Director of the Welsh Books Council, said: “World Book Day is a great celebration of books and reading, and what better way of celebrating the occasion than giving a gift of a book to family and friends? Literacy levels amongst children have been highlighted in Wales recently, and focussing on the enjoyment of reading will also help to equip a new generation with the necessary reading and writing skills.”
