Glamorgan’s Record Defeat

Glamorgan ended a miserable one-day season with a record defeat at the hands of Somerset. The 249-run loss was the largest suffered by Glamorgan in their history.

Somerset posted 368-4 and Glamorgan – without injured skipper Jamie Dalrymple or Australian Mark Cosgrove – could only muster 119 in reply.

The visitors had to be aggressive from ball one but no-one got an innings going, save Ben Wright’s 36 from 34 balls – comparatively pedestrian with the home side’s batting.

Taunton is famed for it’s large totals so Glamorgan knew they were up against it when Somerset won the toss and decided to bat first. The hosts proceeded to rack up the third highest one-day score at Taunton.

The visitors would have been pleased to see the back of Marcus Trescothick for just 22 but his opening partner Pete Trego struck a career-best 147 from just 89 balls. But the most remarkable innings came from Jos Buttler: he made 90 not out from only 33 balls. His eight fours and seven sixes ground Glamorgan into the turf as David Harrison’s eight overs cost 100 runs.

The defeat saw the Welsh county end their Clydesdale Bank 40 League campaign bottom of Group A – below the ECB Unicorns, a team of minor counties players.

Matthew Maynard, Glamorgan Director of Cricket, has spoke of his desire for overseas player Mark Cosgrove to return to the Swalec Stadium next season. The Australian has made 1,054 runs at 50 in first-class cricket this season.

Glamorgan are also in the market for left-arm seamer Graeme Wagg from Derbyshire.
