Hollywood star Naomi Watts is celebrating this week after runaway champions Glantraeth were presented with the Lock Stock Welsh Alliance Division One trophy.
The star of blockbusters King Kong and Boxing Day tsunami movie The Impossible spent part of her childhood on Anglesey and is Honorary President of village football club Glantraeth.
Club secretary Stan Strickland sent the actress, who is now based in New York, an e-mail notifying her of the success within hours of the club clinching the title.
They were presented with the trophy by Lock Stock’s Rob Jones this week after two goals from Corrig McGonigle gave them a hard-fought 2-0 win over visitors St Asaph City.
It stretched their unassailable lead at the top of the table to a massive 18 points over Llandudno Junction.
Saints held out for over an hour before McGonigle scored from the spot after being brought down and he added a second penalty to seal the win.
The Lock Stock Trophy was presented by Rob Jones, Lock Stock Site Supervisor, who said: “It’s been an incredible run of results for Glantraeth who actually lost their first two matches of the league season.
“It must be especially sweet to get their hands on the league trophy after a start like that and it’s good to be presenting the trophy to an Anglesey side as we open our first storage park on the island.”
Glantraeth have won 13 of their last 14 games and have only lost once since the beginning of October.
Stan Strickland said: “It wasn’t the best of games but it’s been a brilliant season and a very good league.
“I’ve sent Naomi Watts an update and last year she sent us a video message ahead of a cup final and hopefully we’ll hear from her again soon.
“She has fond memories of her childhood on Anglesey and that’s why she agreed to be out president in February last year.
“We’re delighted to have won the Lock Stock Welsh Alliance Division One title. It’s been all about good players, good management and a brilliant committee.”
And it’s not over yet for the Anglesey side who have two cup finals next week as they take on Llanrug United in the Mawddach Cup Final next Tuesday at Bangor before facing Penrhyndeudraeth in the Lock Stock Cookson Cup Final at Nantlle Vale on Saturday, September 13.
Pen shocked Glantraeth back in August on the opening day of the season when they won 3-2 at Glan’s ground but when the sides met in the league last month at Penrhyndeudraeth Glan won with goals from Gethin Maxwell and Gerwyn Jones and in their Mawddach Cup run Pen were beaten 3-2.
