Go wild at Garwnant

Visitors to Garwnant will be able to meet some of the animals who call the forest their home during a Wild Things weekend later this month.

Forestry Commission Wales staff will be on hand to talk about the different habitats which make ideal homes for many of our woodland wildlife and show how we can help to look after them.

The Wild Things weekend takes place on Saturday, 28 August and Sunday, 29 August in the forest around the newly-opened visitor centre, just five miles outside Merthyr Tydfil and 14 miles from Brecon.

There will also be mini beast hunts or you can become like an animal of the forest and build yourself a den in the woods.

Visitors will also be able to learn how to make bird boxes, dragonflies and pine-cone critters, plus lots more.

All activities will be available from 11am to 5pm and are free, apart from a car parking charge of £2 per car for the day.

The Wild Things weekend will be preceded by a climate change exhibition in the FC Wales-managed visitor centre highlighting the role trees can play in combating the effects of global warming.

The free exhibition runs from Saturday, 14 August to Sunday, 22 August between 10am and 4pm and includes interactive displays for children and adults.

The FC Wales visitor centre was recently re-opened to the public by Rural Affairs Minister Elin Jones after a closure of nearly three years for extensive refurbishment.

It has a brand new information centre, education hall / conference facility, restaurant, upgraded walking trails (including an all-ability walking trail), mountain bike trails, bike park, adventure play area, animal puzzle trail and adventure play area.

The on-site restaurant/coffee shop offers a fantastic range of hot and cold food, beverages and ice cream, provided by Just Perfect Catering.
