Early indications from the WJEC of the outcomes of this year’s GCSE examinations indicate that pupils in Cardiff have made very good progress again this year.
Over a fifth of the grades awarded in Cardiff were the highest grades (A*/A) with the percentage of 22.5 the best ever recorded and now three per cent ahead of the all-Wales figure. Over eight per cent of pupils achieved the prestigious A* grade compared to just 6.6 per cent in Wales.
The percentage of grades A*-G awarded remained within 0.1 per cent of the high point achieved in 2010, with a 98 per cent; success rate.
Councillor Freda Salway, Executive Member for Education and Lifelong Learning, said: “I look forward every year to receiving the GCSE examination results because it gives me the opportunity to praise the effort, hard work and commitment put in by the pupils and their teachers. It seems that 2011 will prove to be another strong performance and I am delighted to congratulate all our young people on these excellent results.
“We are committed to ensuring that everyone, whatever their starting point, has the opportunity to succeed during their time in school. As we celebrate the successes of our pupils and their families, on behalf of the Council, I wish them all the very best for their future achievements in education or training post 16.”
Chris Jones, Chief Education Officer, said: “These early results suggest that the grades awarded in 2011 will represent another good year for schools and learners in Cardiff. These results are a testament to the hard work and dedication of pupils and teachers alike and bode well for the continuing improvements in standards we are committed to achieving on behalf of all our young people”.
