Gorseinon could get NEAT treatment

Neglected parts of Gorseinon could be spruced up and brought back to life by a dedicated NEAT team.

Swansea Council is in talks with Gorseinon Town Council about developing the dedicated group of clean-up staff who would tackle areas in the community that are neglected, suffer from fly-tipping and litter problems or have become overgrown with weeds.

The team would be the fourth dedicated team in Swansea to focus its efforts in one area and help its local community.

Swansea Council launched the Neighbourhood Environment Action Team (NEAT) initiative in 2007 and has provided meaningful work for adults with learning disabilities.

The Council currently has six teams that work throughout Swansea and three dedicated teams working in Mumbles, Pontarddulais and Clydach.

Community Councils partly fund the special teams and help to point them in the direction of where the clean-ups are most needed.

Cllr John Hague, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for the Environment, said: “The NEAT initiative has been really successful in helping to clean up land throughout Swansea.

“We have developed partnerships with Community Councils and, as a result, have put together a number of dedicated teams.

“Residents in Clydach, Pontarddulais and Mumbles have been very positive about the work of the NEAT teams in their community and I’m sure that Gorseinon will also benefit greatly from having the extra help.”

Recently in Clydach, the dedicated NEAT Team picked up a special award for their work in the community. The award was presented at an annual awards presentation in November last year and helps recognise unsung heroes in Swansea Valley.

The NEAT initiative is a partnership scheme of the Council’s Environment Department and Social Services Works Development and is funded as part of the Coastal Project.

The Coastal Project is funded by the Wales European Funding Office. The project helps and supports the often complex needs of individuals who are experiencing difficulties or barriers to accessing employment as a result of illness or disability.
