GPS Tracking to Target Fly-tippers in The Valleys

The Fly-tipping Action Wales partnership has launched a pilot scheme with the Welsh Government, to track cases of fly-tipping across local authorities in the Valleys Regional Park, South Wales, including Blaenau Gwent and Torfaen.

A first in Wales, the scheme using GPS technology will help reduce cases of fly-tipping in the nine local authorities within the Valleys Regional Park and will also identify trends in fly-tipping and key hot-spots.

Latest figures show that more than 48,000 incidents of fly-tipping were recorded in Wales (01 April 2009 to 31 March 2010). In Blaenau Gwent and Torfaen, 976 incidents were recorded.

The pilot scheme co-ordinated by Welsh Government funded initiative, Fly-tipping Action Wales is part of the Valleys Regional Park initiative, which is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Welsh Government.

The pilot scheme will see a total of 53 GPS units used across all nine local authorities, allowing enforcement officers to record all cases of fly-tipping.

Councillor John Hopkins, Blaenau Gwent Council’s Executive Member for Crime and Disorder and Safer Communities says: “Fly-tipping is an offence that blights our beautiful landscape here in Blaenau Gwent and also costs the authority a lot of money. We are, however, becoming more and more sophisticated in our operations to catch offenders out and this case should be a clear warning to anyone who thinks that fly-tipping is the cheap and easy option.”
