William Graham (Conservative AM for South Wales East) condemns Fourteen Locks Canal centre arson attack – a mindless action; devastating to image of Newport.
“The fact that two fires were detected at the fourteen locks canal centre indicates that this is potentially an act of mindless criminal vandalism”.
“There are many sites around the City which contribute to the world-wide attraction of Newport; with visitors from all around the globe coming to appreciate our unique heritage and natural environment”.
“It is sad that this centre, which attracts 50,000 visitors each year, and offers visitors exhibitions on the history of our canal network, a café and meeting-rooms for school pupils and community groups, had been targeted”.
“This action has such an impact, it is beyond understanding why someone should deliberately attempt to destroy this centre. People have a duty to report all they know about this attack to the authorities”.
