A Granmother from Old Colwyn was crowned Queen for the day at a jubilee lunch for Cartrefi Conwy residents held in Llanrwst.
Yvonne Hicks, 58, of Parciau Close, was made to feel like a royal VIP during the event for the All Together Group at the Eagles Hotel in the centre of the Conwy Valley town.
She was the lucky lady whose name was drawn out in a raffle to be crowned as Her Majesty and it meant she didn’t need to lift a finger for the rest of the day and was made to feel very special.
The buffet lunch and entertainment was organised by the residents’ All Together Group which secured funding for the celebration through Cartrefi Conwy’s Community Chest Grant.
Cartrefi Conwy is one of North Wales’ foremost providers of affordable and high quality homes for local communities throughout the borough of Conwy.
Yvonne, a mum-of-two and grandmother-of-three, said: “It has been very nice to be Queen and get looked after for the day. It certainly makes a change.
“I didn’t have to queue up for my lunch, it was brought to me, and I will have the great honour of cutting the cake later.
“I am a big fan of the real Queen. She just always seems like such a nice person and is a wonderful representative for the country. I would rather have a Queen than a President any day.”
One of the main organisers of the event was Allison Hughes, Housing Warden for Cartrefi Conwy, who said: “We have had around 65 people at the event which is a fantastic turnout and it is lovely to bring our residents together like this to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
“All of our residents will be presented with a china mug at the end of the event so they have something to take away and mark the day with.
“It makes my job very worthwhile when we bring everyone together like this and I think it is important for our residents to be given the opportunity to mark the jubilee in this special way.
“After all, many of them have grown up with the Queen and are very pleased to see her reach her diamond jubilee.”
The residents were also treated to live music from bluegrass band, The Soggy Bottom Boys, who donate the money they raise at events to a host of charities including Ty Gobaith/Hope House children’s hospice and the Welsh Air Ambulance.
