Kind-hearted volunteers who completed the Mayor’s Charity Stretcher Run have presented him with an impressive £1700 to benefit the good causes he is supporting this year.
The sum was raised by staff from the Mayor’s office, the Royal Glamorgan Hospital, Welsh Regimental Association, Comrades Club and the Pontypridd TA Association, who took to the streets of Taff Ely to raise the money.
They carried the stretched from the Eglwys Bach surgery in Pontypridd all the way to Llantrisant Leisure Centre. As well as securing sponsorship for the run, they also collected money from kind-hearted residents along the way.
All proceeds from the run will be donated to the Mayor’s Charity Appeal, which this year is supporting Macmillan Cancer Support, Help for Heroes and Diabetes UK (Cymru).
Participants were transported to the start of the stretcher run by Edwards Coaches and Costain provided support vehicles for the journey from Pontypridd to Llantrisant.
Fagins in Church Village provided much-needed refreshment, food and a place for the charity supporters to refuel along the way while the Old Comrades Club in Rhydyfelin helped to collect money along the way.
Mayor Cllr Robert Smith said: “I am so impressed with the efforts of the Charity Stretcher Run and was pleased to receive a cheque for such a significant amount, on behalf of my Charity Appeal, this month.
“I would once again like to thank all those who worked so hard to make the day a success, including those who took part and made donations or sponsorship, and also those who gave their services to ensure the run went smoothly.”
Taff Neighbourhood Policing Inspector Lee Porter said: “The local Neighbourhood Policing Team was very happy to support the Mayor’s Charitable Appeal whilst engaging with the community on their usual patrols which includes the use of cycles.”
