A village shop has opened its doors thanks to a grant scheme designed to breathe new life into rural communities.
Trevor Premier Stores will provide newspapers, food and other daily essentials for people living in the village, as well as nearby Garth and other surrounding areas.
Trevor is just one of many Wrexham villages to benefit from the Rural Services Pilot Grant Scheme, which is run by Northern Marches Cymru (NMC).
The scheme aims to help improve services and facilities for people living in rural parts of the borough, including shops and businesses which are often the hub of local communities.
Trevor residents are expected to welcome the new store – particularly the elderly, who have had to travel further afield since the old convenience store, Trevor Wines, closed a year ago.
The next closest shop and post office also closed two years ago, making the situation even worse.
Shop manager Kirubakaran Shanmuganathan said: “I hope this store proves to be a valuable asset to the community, providing them with everyday essentials on their doorstep.”
Trevor Stores will be open 7am-10pm Monday to Sunday.
The grant awarded to the business has helped to pay for refurbishments, allowing the premises to start trading as a shop again.
NMC officer Dave Gittins said: “The opening of Trevor Stores means residents will no longer have to travel out of the village to buy everyday essentials – which means they’ll no longer have to tackle the hilly walk to neighbouring Acrefair or have to pay for taxi or bus fairs.
“This will be especially beneficial as we get closer to winter, with the prospect of bad weather making it more difficult for the elderly in particular to travel out of the village at times.”
