A ward within the University Hospital of Wales (UHW) in Cardiff recently received a donation of a new bed from a family who wanted to say ‘thank you’ for the exceptional care they received.
The new double bed on the Transitional Care Ward in the Maternity Unit at UHW will mean that parents can have a more comfortable stay in hospital if baby requires a few days of treatment on the ward.
Proud Grandparents, Frederick and Emanuela Whitcomb, wrote a lovely letter to the Health Board which said: “Our daughter Claudia gave birth to our granddaughter at UHW in August last year, and after a long and testing labour was placed on the Post Natal Ward for 6 days.
“The care they both received throughout the process was second to none, and as a result we wish to donate a new double bed for a side room in the ward.”
New Mum, Claudia O’Donoghue said: “I recently gave birth to my little girl at UHW, and after a long labour was placed on the Post Natal Ward for 6 days whilst my daughter completed a course of antibiotics.
“The care we received throughout the entire process was first class, from being admitted to the Midwifery-led Unit, to my transfer upstairs for (eventually!) an emergency C-section.
“I really cannot fault any of the staff we encountered, and cannot thank them enough for their help and support, specifically on the ward in the week afterwards. Having so many kind experts on hand really got me through that testing first week.
“Half way through my stay my husband and I were fortunate enough to be moved into a side room on the Post Natal Ward (Room 12A), and whilst we were incredibly grateful for this I must admit having such a low bed and soft mattress was difficult for me after my section.”
“As a family we have decided we would like to buy this specialist bed for the ward as it may help other families in the future.”
Suzanne Hardacre, Head of Midwifery at Cardiff and Vale UHB said: “We are delighted to announce that we have a new double bed within our Transitional Care Ward in Maternity UHW.
“This addition was the result of a very kind donation by the Whitcomb family following the birth of their grandchild.
“I would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to the family for this generous donation which will make staying within our Transitional Care Ward more comfortable for new mums and dads, whose baby may require treatment for a few days.”
