Great Compost Giveaway

Residents of Wrexham are being urged to make sure they don’t miss out on the great compost giveaway again this year during National Compost Awareness Week running from 1 May – 7 May 2011.

Wrexham Council is making approximately 40 tonnes of compost available (provided by Waste Recycling Group Ltd) which can be collected free of charge from two locations during the week.

The two events are taking place at Alyn Waters Country Park (Llay-side) on Wednesday 4 May 2011 and Ty Mawr Country Park on Saturday 7 May 2011 both running from 10am – 4pm. Please be aware that this is the first time that the Alyn Waters event is being held at the Llay side of the Country Park.

Wrexham residents are asked to bring their own sacks and a shovel to take away their free soil improver. Due to the popularity of this event, residents will initially be restricted to two sacks.

Catherine Golightly, Waste Strategy Officer, said: “The compost giveaway is an attempt to reward residents for supporting the Council’s kerbside Recycle with Michael Recycling Scheme.

“It is an opportunity for Wrexham residents to come and see what they have helped to create – local people give us their organic waste and we take it away for composting and now it is being returned to resident’s gardens.”

In 2010 – 2011 Wrexham’s residents helped divert approximately 16,000 tonnes of Garden and Organic Waste away from landfill and turned it into compost which is an incredible amount.

It is important to note that throughout the year Wrexham residents that visit the Household Waste Recycling Centres based at Bryn Lane, Wrexham Industrial Estate, The Lodge, Brymbo and Plas Madoc are now able to collect 2 free bags of compost when using the facilities available! Please bring a sack and shovel to collect the compost whilst onsite.
