Staff at Caerphilly county borough council are being urged to leave their cars at home and pedal to work next week to celebrate National Bike Week (June 18th – 26th).
The aim of National Bike Week is to get people cycling more often to ease traffic congestion, cut carbon emissions and to help make our local communities a little healthier. Last year almost half a million people across the UK participated in the environmentally friendly event.
CCBC deputy leader Cllr Colin Mann said, “Hopefully many of our staff will get on their bikes to support this year’s National Bike Week. The council is committed to sustainability and we are always looking at cleaner, greener ways to do business. We hope we can lead by example and encourage the wider community to also ditch their cars and take a more sustainable transport option for the daily commute.”
Over half of our car journeys are less than 5 miles – swapping them for an easy 30 minute bike ride can save a small fortune in fuel costs as well as reducing our carbon footprint and improve the environment into the bargain.
It’s also better for your health, cyclists live on average at least two years longer than non-cyclists and their fitness levels are equivalent to being ten years younger – so forget nip and tuck, think pedal and push!!
A special Commuter Challenge will take place on Wednesday June 22nd involving a race from Pontllanfraith House to Penallta House between a pushbike, electric bike and car. The race will start at 12.30pm from Pontllanfraith House.
