Green fingered pupils from Hengoed Primary School are celebrating, having recently achieved the prestigious Eco School Green Flag Award.
The Eco School Green Flag Award symbolises excellence in the field of environmental activity, and that’s what inspired the 10-strong pupil committee lead by their teacher Mrs Watkins, to go above and beyond when creating their first year-long action plan.
Cllr Phil Bevan, Cabinet Member for Education, Leisure and Lifelong Learning said, “I am delighted that so many of our county borough’s schools have really taken this environmental scheme to heart, helping them to become more environmentally aware and committing to making a difference in supporting sustainable development”.
He continued, “Hengoed Primary have done a fantastic job in achieving this impressive award”.
Within its action plan, Hengoed Primary School is committed to introduce waste minimisation compost bins and minimising water wastage water hippos; global citizenship following visits to schools in Poland and Turkey and also growing organic vegetables in their very own allotment patch.
Members of the school’s eco committee were excited when they learned they had achieved the award. Connor Webb said “I couldn’t believe that we got it. I was so excited. We had lots of help from people from the community”.
Fleur Jones added, “I screamed when they told us because I was so amazed. I think we deserved it!”
