How does your garden grow? Very well in Aberdare Girls School thanks to a group of passionate green fingered students.
The students from Aberdare, who are collectively known as the Flower Power Girls, have created a highly successful and award winning gardening club – growing plants and learning about seedings and the intricate nature of how vegetables and flowers grow in seasons.
The group of nine students have now further developed a disused piece of land in their school and transformed it into a garden that is enjoyed by the community, school and themselves.
The club which was established back in 2006 has gone from strength to strength and the group has recently reaped the fruits of their labour by producing their first crop of organic potatoes which the whole school enjoyed during lunchtime in the canteen.
E3+ Co-ordinators, Sian Payne and Karen Davies, said: “They have fully committed to the project, each other and the garden; they have learned skills and knowledge that is transferable. They have personally taken pride in their achievement.”
Councillor Eudine Hanagan, Cabinet Member for Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning, said: “It is important that we recognise and reward the outstanding achievements of our young people.
“They put a lot of hard work and dedication in to these activities, encouraged by the opportunities that are now available throughout the Council’s Services for Young People Department.”
