Encouraging a can-do attitude and helping Gwynedd’s young people to develop key skills so they can succeed in their own communities were key messages from a recent event held in Llanberis as part of the innovative Llwyddo’n Lleol project.
Young people from across the Arfon area of the county came together to the first event held to promote opportunities within various sectors in Gwynedd. Pupils from Ysgol Tryfan, Brynrefail, Syr Hugh Owen and Dyffryn Nantlle took part in this event organised by Llwyddo’n Lleol which focused on the energy sector.
The pupils had the opportunity to meet key employers including First Hydro, Magnox Ltd and the National Skills Academy for power, as well as hearing from Gareth Jones the owner of Carbon Zero about the opportunities of setting up a business in this important local sector. As part of the event, the young people also had the chance to put their practical skills to good use by developing their own wind turbines.
Councillor Dewi Lewis, Gwynedd Council’s Economy and Community Portfolio Leader said:
“Llwyddo’n Lleol is an innovative project which aims to encourage our young people to develop their skills and succeed in their own community.
“This first event gave these young people the opportunity to learn more about one of the most important sectors in the county, as well as developing practical skills. It’s so important that we engage with young people and ensure that they fully realise the wealth of opportunity Gwynedd has to offer them and the important part they can play in the future of their own communities.”
Further events highlighting the potential within sectors such as outdoor activity, creative industries and the green economy will be held throughout Gwynedd in the coming months.
Also as part of the Llwyddo’n Lleol project, various workshops are held with young people throughout the county to generate possible business ideas. Support is available from Gwynedd Council and other partners to help develop a business idea with a bursary of up to £1,000 available to pay for start-up costs.
Entrepreneurship modules are also being run at Gwynedd schools and colleges as part of the Llwyddo’n Lleol project. These accredited modules allow young people to develop key entrepreneurial skills.
Llwyddo’n Lleol is a £3.8 million Gwynedd Council-led project which helps young people across the north-west Wales region to develop and succeed in their own communities. It is supported locally by Gwynedd, Ynys Mon, Conwy and Denbigh Councils. It targets young people from 11 to 19 years old.
This project has been made possible by the EU’s Convergence European Social Fund through the Welsh Assembly Government.
