The tragic events that took place 75 years ago in the Gresford Colliery disaster, near Wrexham, have been marked in the National Assembly for Wales by the town’s AM, Lesley Griffiths.
Ms. Griffiths has Tabled a formal Statement of Opinion in the Assembly, marking the anniversary.
The wording of her Statement reads simply:
“This Assembly remembers, 75 years on, the 266 men who tragically died in the Gresford Colliery disaster on the 22nd September 1934.”
Commenting, Lesley Griffiths AM said:
“Although this dreadful disaster happened back in 1934, there are many local people whose parents and relatives perished on that fateful day. Indeed, there are also people whose relatives took part in the rescue operations that ensued in the hours after the tragedy took place. It is as a mark a respect to all those people that I have decided to raise this anniversary in the Assembly by means of this Statement.
“Many of my Assembly colleagues have already sign up to this Statement, as they too recognise the importance and the poignancy of this anniversary.”
