Wrexham Assembly Member, Lesley Griffiths, has welcomed the launch this week of the new Holyhead–Cardiff express service and claimed economic benefits will stem from improved links to two national capitals.
The new express service operates between Holyhead and Cardiff at the new shorter journey time of four hours and seventeen minutes, in addition to the existing early morning ‘Y Gerallt Gymro’ service, which runs along a different route between the two destinations.
The service – which links the two national Capitals of Cardiff and – via Holyhead – Dublin has been made possible thanks to a Welsh Government investment of £620,000.
Several reports in recent months had raised doubts over whether or not the service was to include a Wrexham stop or not, prompting concern from Wrexham constituents.
However, today Lesley Griffiths AM said:
“I am very pleased for the residents of Wrexham that this new service has gone ahead and includes a Wrexham stop in both directions. I had made repeated representations to the Transport Minister on the matter and it is good to see the service finally up and running.
“This new transport link will provide an economic boost to the town and surrounding area, providing commuter and business links with two national capitals – Cardiff and Dublin via Holyhead – for the first time.
“Efficient transport links are also vital to the economy of Wales. This new service represents a major step towards the Welsh Government aim or improving transport links between North and South Wales.”
