Wrexham Assembly Member Lesley Griffiths has welcomed a new law introduced by the Welsh Government stating all establishments serving or selling food in Wales will now be required to display new food hygiene ratings.
The scheme will cover places where people eat out including restaurants, takeaways, mobile caterers, cafes, hotels and pubs; places where people shop for food such as supermarkets, bakeries and delicatessens; and establishments such as schools, hospitals, children’s nurseries and residential care homes.
The Food Hygiene Bill requires businesses to clearly and publically display a rating between 0 and 5, 0 meaning urgent improvements are necessary and 5 indicating hygiene standards are very good.
Local authorities will carry out inspections and report their findings to the Food Standards Agency for publication, with the results also available online.
Wrexham AM Griffiths said:
“A mandatory display for food hygiene ratings is something I always supported and campaigned for ever since I was first elected as an Assembly Member in 2007.”
“I brought forward a short debate on the issue and was fortunate enough to introduce and pass the Bill in my role as Minister for Health and Social Services.”
“In the past, there have been occasions where people in Wrexham have seriously suffered and been affected by substantial neglect and a decline in food hygiene standards.”
“The Food Hygiene Bill will lead to greater transparency and enable consumers to make more informed decisions about where they choose to eat.”
“It also offers businesses the incentive and opportunity to drive up standards in their respective premises.”
