Anglesey’s five political group leaders have re-affirmed their commitment to driving the county council forward.
Their joint statement issued on Wednesday (February 24th) follows a stark message from the Welsh Assembly Government’s Minister for Social Justice and Local Government.
Addressing a meeting of the Full Council in Llangefni, Carl Sargeant AM stressed that only decisive action, sustained improvement and member unity could move the Authority forward.
Isle of Anglesey County Council Leader, Councillor Clive McGregor, Leader of the Opposition, Cllr John Chorlton (Labour), Cllr Bob Parry OBE (Plaid Cymru), Cllr Gareth Winston Roberts OBE (Anglesey Forward) and Cllr Hefin Thomas (Menai Group) have issued a joint response.
They stressed, “We remain committed to corporate recovery and driving this Authority forward. As group leaders, we will continue to work together, and with the Recovery Board, in order to achieve the many important aims associated with corporate recovery.”
“There has already been improvement on several fronts and we are pleased that this has been recognised. There is patently, however, a great deal we still need to do.”
“The seriousness of the situation this Authority faces should not be underestimated by any member. Today, we have received a stark message from the Minister – we must change or the consequences for Anglesey will be dire.”
During his 15 minute address, the Minister said that political infighting should cease immediately, that the role of the Standards Committee and scrutiny provision should be strengthened, and that the appointment of Council Chairman, committee chairs and members to outside bodies should be carried out on a non-political basis.
Cllr Clive McGregor added, “As Council Leader, I am firmly committed to recovery and any councillor who does not want to be a part of this process should resign from the Council and make way for people who will help to make a difference.”
