Grants of up to £1,000 are available to help voluntary and community groups hold play schemes on Anglesey during the school holidays.
The Cymorth Open Access Play Grant Scheme is a support fund for children and young people and one of the Welsh Assembly Government’s main levers in tackling child poverty.
Priority for this funding will be given to ‘Cymorth’ designated wards on Anglesey, with voluntary or community groups within those areas able access the full £1,000 up to three times a year.
Hundreds of children and young people have already benefited from the grant funding through a number of innovative schemes.
Cymorth funding is also being used to boost young people’s confidence, self esteem and essential basic skills as part of the Basic Life Skills Project in Amlwch. The after school course has gone from strength to strength with 11-15 years olds from Ysgol Syr Thomas Jones learning how to cook healthy meals.
Education and Leisure portfolio holder, Councillor Goronwy O Parry MBE, said, “Cymorth funding makes an important contribution to a number of communities on Anglesey. Many voluntary and community groups have already made good use of the available funding to provide innovative and creative opportunities for our children and young people.”
He added, “I would encourage more local groups to make use of Cymorth funding.”
Cymorth funding can help you hold activities during each half term, Easter, Whitsun, Summer Holidays and Christmas.
If you wish to apply for funding for the Easter holidays, 2 – 16 April 2010, you must make an application by 12 March 2010. Contact Medrwn Môn on (01248) 724 944 for advice about how to apply and guidelines for favoured activities.
Cymorth areas on Anglesey include Holyhead’s Morawelon, Holyhead Town, Maeshyfryd, Parc a’r Mynydd, Porthyfelin, Kingsland and London Road wards; Llangefni’s Tudur and Cyngar wards; Amlwch’s Port and Town wards; Newborough, Dwyran and Llangaffo in Rhosyr Ward; Aberffraw, Llanfaelog, Bryn Du and Pencarnisiog in Aberffraw Ward; together with Gwalchmai and Bryngwran.
