An Environmental Action Day was held this week at Gwalchmai, Anglesey where six skips of waste and recycling were removed for households in the surrounding area. A litter pick was held in the morning with the Probation Service and volunteers from the Priory Richmond Hill, Holyhead and in the afternoon with pupils from Ysgol Gymuned y Ffridd taking part.
“We have had an number of successful ‘Environmental Action Days’ on Anglesey and are holding more in coming months,” said Elin Jones, Isle of Anglesey County Council Senior Waste Management Officer Project Development and Performance, “It is important that bulky waste is disposed of responsibly and recycled whenever possible.”
Throughout the day skips were allocated to different types of waste, the wood and metal collected is sent to be recycled. “If you bring your waste to a special Action Day or to the Household Waste and Recycling Centres on Anglesey you will be asked to put different waste into different skips, we look to recycle as much of the waste as possible, to avoid to going to landfill,” says Elin. Six tonnes of waste was removed and 3 tonnes of the waste was sent to be recycled.
Working in partnership on the Action Day with Isle of Anglesey County Council Waste Management Section, Housing Section and Tidy Towns were Gareth Owen from Keep Wales Tidy, the Priory Richmond Hill, the Probation Service, Ysgol Gymuned y Ffridd, North Wales Police, Verdant Group and Cymdeithas Tai Eyri. North Wales Fire and Rescue Service raised fire safety awareness on the day and carried out 76 free home fires safety checks in the village.
“During the Action Day we collected over 20 sacks of litter from Gwalchmai football field and surrounding area with the Council, community and school working together,” said Elin. Additional Environmental Action Days are being held on 20 June at Isgraig Llangefni, and in Amlwch and Holyhead in the near future.
