Gwynedd Council boosts to fitness facilities

Major improvement work has started at sports and leisure facilities in Caernarfon, which is aimed at attracting more users.

The £300,000 Gwynedd Council project at the Arfon Tennis Centre in Caernarfon will double the size of the fitness room, giving members more choice of the very latest hi-tech fitness facilities.

The existing fitness room will be expanded, replacing the current café and office space. Vending machines will be installed instead of the café, and users can also use the café at Arfon Leisure Centre which is situated a few yards away, across the car park.

The tennis hall viewing gallery – popular with parents whose children are playing tennis – will be retained.

Councillor Roy Owen, Gwynedd Council portfolio holder with responsibility for leisure, said:

“I’m delighted that work has started on this project and that the Council has been able to invest in these important and popular services.

“We all know that keeping active is key to a healthy and happy life and I would urge people to continue to use Gwynedd Council leisure and fitness facilities, and would encourage people who don’t already use them to call by their local leisure centre to see which activities are available.

“We understand that there may be some disruption to the Tennis Centre’s opening hours as this work is carried out, and are grateful to users’ patience and understanding during this time. We are confident that this will be kept to a minimum with the centre closed for a few days only.”

Gwynedd Council’s Provider and Leisure Department will inform Tennis Centre users if the centre has to close because of the building work through notices in the centre and information will be posted on the Council’s website, www.gwynedd.gov.uk

This exciting scheme will be carried out in phases and it is expected that the improvements will be completed by April 2011.

There are Gwynedd Council-run leisure centres in all parts of the county, offering a wide range of health and fitness activities. For more information about what’s on offer and opening hours visit your local centre or go to the website: www.gwynedd.gov.uk/leisure
