Gwynedd Council GCSE Results 2010

Gwynedd Council has paid tribute to all of the County’s students who have worked so hard and achieved excellent result in their GCSE exams this year.

Dewi R Jones, Gwynedd Council’s Head of Education, said he was delighted with the GCSE results in schools.

He said: “The results for Gwynedd schools are very good again this year and the pupils are to be warmly congratulated for their hard work and dedication. The percentage gaining grades A*- C has improved from last year to 70.5% while the percentage of higher grades [A* and A] are also slightly higher than last year [20.1%].

“These figures are higher than the national averages for Wales [66.4% and 19.2%]. I am also pleased to report that the percentage achieving grades A*- G [99.5%] is very good and also higher than the national average of 98.7%. This reflects the emphasis placed in our schools on inclusion, equal opportunity and the success of pupils as individuals. We can be very proud of these results.”

He reported that the results were good in all subjects. Whilst noting the need for caution when dealing with raw data, especially in subjects where the number of candidates is often small, he referred to Gwynedd’s performance in some individual subjects.

“It is very difficult to draw conclusions from raw figures. It is, however, pleasing to note that the percentage of pupils gaining A*-C grades in the core subjects [Welsh, English, Mathematics and Science] is good. This reflects the emphasis placed on developing pupils’ essential skills,” added Dewi Jones.

“In addition, the A*-C grades were also very good across a wide range of subjects  – Physical Education; Catering; Religious Studies; Music; Geography; History; French and ICT. It is also pleasing to note that many of our young people have been very successful in vocational subjects such as Leisure and Tourism and Health and Social Care.”

Councillor Liz Saville Roberts, Education Portfolio Leader of Gwynedd Council said:

“These results are very good – the pupils are to be warmly congratulated. The success of all our young people is vitally important. I would like to thank the teachers for their hard work throughout the year”.

Gwynedd Council Leader, Councillor Dyfed Edwards added:

“These excellent results are testament to the hard work and dedication of our young people, teachers and parents – the success of our young people is key to Gwynedd’s future.

“I would like to congratulate every one of the young people for their hard work and success, and in particular to those who have achieved their potential. We wish them every success for the future.”
