Gwynedd Council gets to grips with the ‘grot spots’

Members of the Bangor Pride Partnership will be rolling up their sleeves for a clean-up operation at a fly tipping hot spot in the city.

The local community will come together next month to clear land adjacent to the Trem Elidir Estate in Bangor, known locally as Donkey Lane.

The partnership includes Gwynedd Council’s Tidy Town Team, North Wales Police and Fly-tipping Action Wales working in partnership with Ysgol Tryfan, Keep Wales Tidy and the local community.

In recent years the site has been blighted by fly tipping and other environmental crime, it is hoped that by working together the local community can improve the site and make it a valued asset for the neighbourhood once again.

Councillor Gareth Roberts, Gwynedd Council’s Environment Portfolio Leader, said:

“The people of Gwynedd tell us they want clean and tidy communities and this is a great opportunity for the people of Bangor to come together to create something which we can all be proud of.

“I would urge the people of Gwynedd to respect each other and the environment and to dispose of their rubbish in a safe and legal manner.”

Once the clear-up operation is complete, Gwynedd Council staff will be closely monitoring the area to prevent further fly tipping and environmental crime. Gwynedd Council’s Street Enforcement wardens can issue on the spot fines of £75 for minor fly tipping offences. Those responsible for more serious waste disposal and fly tipping offences could face a Court summons and fines running into thousands of pounds.

Anthony Randles of Fly-tipping Action Wales, said: “We’re proud to be involved in this clean-up operation at Donkey Lane.  It’s positive to hear that school pupils, residents and other members of the local community are committed to improving their local environment.

“It is vitally important that this area remains waste free after the clean-up. I would encourage householders to use the local facilities provided and to question anyone removing waste from their property as to its disposal.”

This work is supported by the Tidy Towns Initiative through the Welsh Assembly Government and Fly-tipping Action Wales.
