Gwynedd Council and Fly-tipping Action Wales are urging people to get rid of their waste responsibly over the festive period.
The till bells of Gwynedd will be ringing out over Christmas and the New Year as we prepare for the holiday and take advantage of the sales.
This may invariably lead to households generating more waste over the Christmas period and Gwynedd Council’s Street Enforcement Team is reminding people not to be tempted to break the law by dumping their rubbish instead of getting rid of it in a responsible manner.
Also, many of us may be treating ourselves to a bargain in the post-Christmas sales by buying a new gadget or furniture for the home. Again, Gwynedd Council is urging people to think carefully about what they do with their old furniture and appliances, and to recycle or dispose of them in the correct manner.
Fly tipping – or dumping rubbish – is illegal, irresponsible and dangerous. It makes the community look untidy and costs tens of thousands of pounds annually to clear. It can pose a risk to other people, especially children, and to wildlife.
Gwynedd Council’s Street Enforcement Wardens can issue on-the-spot fines of £75 for minor fly-tipping offences. Those responsible for more serious waste disposal and fly tipping offences could face a Court summons and fines running into thousands of pounds.
Councillor Gareth Roberts, Gwynedd Council’s Environment Portfolio Leader, said:
“The people of Gwynedd tell us that they want clean and tidy communities and by working together we can all live in neighbourhoods that we can be proud of.
“I would urge people to respect each other and respect our environment and use the Council’s waste and recycling collection service, or use one of the Council’s waste recycling centres.”
Helen Jenkins, Fly-tipping Action Wales Coordinator, said:
“If you’re planning on a Christmas clear out or if there’s a new sofa or TV at the top of your wish list, make sure that you get rid of your old one and the rest of your waste in a responsible way, by using a registered waste carrier. Otherwise you could find yourself with an extra bill to pay for in January.”
