The annual Gwynedd foster parents’ celebration evening was recently held, paying tribute to carers for their amazing contribution.
There are around 150 vulnerable children in Gwynedd who are able to live and grow up in a safe and comfortable environment thanks to the efforts of foster parents from all parts of the county.
Foster parents can provide a home and the support of a family to children and young people who find themselves in a situation where their own families are unable to look after them for any number of reasons. This could be for only a few days or in some cases for more than a year.
Without this invaluable contribution, there is a risk that a large number of vulnerable children would have to move away from their own communities, extended family, school and friends to be placed with foster families.
During the celebration evening, special awards were given to people who have made an enormous contribution to society – between them they have given 170 years of service.
For 15 years of service each, awards were given to:
John and Elaine Jones, Llangwnnadl;
Alan and Elaine Owen, Bangor
Tom and Sandra Unit, Rhosneigr.
For 10 years of service each, awards were given to:
George and Linda Newsham, Y Ffôr;
Colin and Lynn Errington, Tywyn;
Stephen and Karen Phillips, Caernarfon;
Gwyn and Debbie Roberts, Morfa Nefyn.
Councillor Wyn Williams, Gwynedd Council’s Social Services Portfolio Leader, said:
“I was delighted to be in the same room as so many special people who open their homes to children and young people of all ages at very difficult periods of their lives, when they are in need of a safe home and people that they can trust.
“I was proud to have the opportunity to speak to them personally and to thank them for their contribution.”
