Gwynedd Council has set out its vision for delivering Welsh and bilingually education in the county.
The Welsh Education Scheme sets a clear direction for Welsh medium and bi-lingual education in Gwynedd and underlines the importance of laying firm foundations for the Welsh language in the coming years and to ensure a meaningful continuity throughout the key stages based on clear planning.
Councillor Liz Saville Roberts, Gwynedd Council’s Education Portfolio Leader said:
“As a Council we are committed to providing bi-lingual education of the highest possible quality for every child in the county from the pre-school age upwards. I am delighted that Gwynedd’s education system enables children from all backgrounds to become confident Welsh speakers.
“The Welsh Education Scheme embodies this commitment and ensures that all pupils in Gwynedd posses the appropriate skills in both Welsh and English, with the clear emphasis on acquiring and nurturing skills in the Welsh language for the outset.”
The scheme – which was accepted by Gwynedd councillors at a meeting of the full Council – was drawn up following detailed discussion and consultation, and has been approved by the Welsh Language Board.
Gwynedd Council’s Head of Education, Dewi R Jones added:
“This is an ambitious scheme which builds on the firm foundations which are already in place. I am delighted that Gwynedd’s councillors have confirmed their commitment to the implementation of the scheme and its targets in our educational establishments across the county.”
