Gwynedd Olympic Torch Relay – Road Closures

As the day the Olympic Torch Relay arrival in Gwynedd draws closer Gwynedd Council have announced the road restrictions that will be in place as the Torch travels through ten of Gwynedd’s villages and towns.

As part of the flame’s 70 day journey the flame will travel through Gwynedd on Monday, 28 May arriving in Dolgellau at 10:45am. It will then travel through the streets of Llan Ffestiniog, Blaenau Ffestiniog, Porthmadog, Criccieth, Pwllheli, Bontnewydd, Caernarfon, Y Felinheli and Bangor.

The torch convoy is nine minutes long and there will be 350 crew members travelling with the flame throughout its journey. To secure residents safety the some roads will be closed during the day in these locations. The roads will close approximately 5 minutes before the fixed times, some bus services will also be running late.

The torch will travel in convoy when it is not being carried by torch bearers and during these times there may be some delays to traffic as the convoy makes its way across Gwynedd travelling from Dolgellau to Bangor.

Dafydd Wyn Williams, Gwynedd Council’s Chief Engineer Transportation and Street Care:

“We would advise residents who are travelling on the same route as the torch to leave extra time for their journey, and for those who are travelling to see the flame should try and get to the location an hour before the event.

“Local shops in the area will be open as usual, and car parks will also be open – except Pwllheli Maes and Caernarfon Shell car parks – which will be partly open.

“To ensure public safety we would also encourage people not to park in locations which could impair on the flame’s journey.”
