The care offered by Gwynedd’s foster carers to the county’s most vulnerable children is invaluable – this was the message at the annual Gwynedd Foster Carers dinner arranged by the Council’s Fostering and Adoption team.
Over the past year, ten new foster carers have registered with the Council – now there are 89 foster carers in the county registered with Gwynedd Council, looking after 158 children.
Indeed, the support, advice and information provided for Gwynedd’s foster carers means that the county’s carers are ready to deal with any kind of challenge. This means that children receive care of the highest quality.
Councillor Dai Rees Jones, who leads on Social Services for Gwynedd Council said:
“I’m very pleased that Gwynedd foster carers undertake a professional NVQ qualification – this is a clear sign of their professionalism and the quality care they provide for the county’s children.
“Indeed, 63% of Gwynedd’s foster carers have an NVQ III ‘Children & Young People’ compared with the Wales average of 25%. By the end of September, the county average will have risen to 66% – an exceptional achievement when you consider that the Welsh Assembly target is 50%. We are extremely proud of the fantastic service provided by the county’s dedicated foster carers.”
Gwynedd Council Leader, Councillor Dyfed Edwards added:
“Gwynedd’s foster carers play an invaluable role, and I am delighted that we are able to recognise their commitment and tireless efforts throughout the year. The care they offer are qualities that everyone of us can admire as they create an environment where young people are appreciated and supported.
“Foster carers play a vital role to ensure that children who for whatever reason cannot live with their natural parents for a period, can stay here in Gwynedd – as close as possible to their community so that they can continue to attend the same school and keep in contact with their friends and families.”
The Council is always keen to hear from people who are interested in becoming foster carers. It takes around six months to become a foster carer – from the initial query which includes training and preparation work and meeting experienced foster carers.
