People in Gwynedd will join with thousands the world over this month to remember the innocent victims of genocides which plague modern history.
A service of remembrance will be held at the Penrhyn Hall, Bangor on Wednesday, 27 January to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.
Holocaust Memorial Day commemorates the loss of life by genocide during the Second World War and during later conflicts in Cambodia, Bosnia, Rwanda and Darfur. The memorial day is held on the anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Berkenau camp – the Nazi concentration camp where countless Jews perished.
Holocaust Memorial Day aims to motivate people to ensure that the horrendous crimes committed during the Holocaust and in more recent genocides, are neither forgotten nor repeated, whether in Europe or elsewhere in the world.
Chairman of Gwynedd Council, Councillor Anne Lloyd-Jones said: “On this important day we will commemorate victims, honour survivors and commit to tackling prejudice and discrimination in all societies.
“Everyone is welcomed to attend this service at the Penrhyn Hall, and join thousands of people across the world to honour the past and build a safer, fairer world.”
The service will be held at the Penrhyn Hall, Ffordd Gwynedd, Bangor at 10.30am on Wednesday, 27 January 2010.
