School children across Gwynedd will be able to enjoy a delicious meal of Welsh lamb to celebrate St David’s Day.
Gwynedd Council’s Catering Service has been working closely with three local businesses to ensure that schools across the county receive a roast Welsh lamb lunch on 1 March 2011.
With 9,000 school pupils across the county, ensuring a sufficient supply of Welsh lamb for the day itself was no mean feat, but with the support of local suppliers all the arrangements are now in hand.
Councillor Eric Jones, who leads on Provider Services for Gwynedd Council said:
“As a Council, we are committed to offering Gwynedd’s children a healthy school lunch which includes a variety of excellent local produce.
“Gwynedd’s school children are offered Welsh lamb on a monthly basis, and we are particularly pleased that staff from the Council’s Catering Services have been able to work with local firms to offer Welsh lamb to the county’s 116 schools on St David’s Day. We are grateful to the companies involved for providing the meat on a cost only basis.”
Local firms, Llechwedd Meats Gaerwen and Dafydd Wyn Jones & Son Caernarfon will be supplying the Welsh lamb with Harlech Foodservice Llanystumdwy helping to distribute the meat to the county’s schools in time for 1 March.
Gwynedd Council is committed to making the best use of local produce and supporting local firms to deliver nutritious school meals for the 9,000 children who receive school meals in Gwynedd. In the last financial year, 84% of the funds the Council spent on food for school meals was spent with companies who have their headquarters in Gwynedd, and 97% of the total was spent with companies with their headquarters in Wales.
