Members of Meirion Amateur Radio Society recently presented a cheque for the amazing amount of £520 to the Chairman of RNLI Barmouth and District Fundraisers, Wendy Ponsford.
M.A.R.S. is a small club that was formed to promote amateur radio in south Gwynedd. The membership comes from a wide range of backgrounds and ages and is an exceptionally enthusiastic and active society.
Last year saw the beginning of a partnership between M.A.R.S. and the Barmouth branch of the RNLI. During the last week of January 2009 M.A.R.S. worked very hard raising money for the RNLI by making contact with as many other amateur radio enthusiasts around the world as they were able to in the allotted time. They worked through the night and amassed the amazing sum of £407 that was much more than they had expected.
During the SOS weekend this year M.A.R.S. were at Barmouth Lifeboat Station and the Merioneth Yacht Club and again worked through the night and were rewarded by raising the fantastic amount of £520.
RNLI Barmouth is proud to be associated with M.A.R.S. especially as we were one of the first lifeboat stations to be involved in SOS Radio week and they are the biggest fundraisers of all the radio groups that take part in SOS Week.
Merion Amateur Radio Society will be once again at RNLI Barmouth Lifeboat Station on Sunday 15th August (Open Day) so why not come along and watch the radio enthusiasts at work – you won’t be disappointed.
