Hands up for good hygiene in Ceredigion

A new resource pack highlighting the importance of hand washing to primary school children has been designed in partnership between Public Health Wales and Ceredigion County Council.

The pack provides guidance and ideas for primary schools on how to deliver lessons about personal hygiene and contains background information for teachers about germs, the importance of hand washing and how germs may cause illness. The pack also provides lesson plans and suggested activities on how this information could be relayed in the classroom for pupils at Key Stage (KS) Two.  All primary schools in Ceredigion will receive a copy of the pack.

Cerys Humphreys, Senior Health Promotion Practitioner for Ceredigion Public Health Team, said: “As schools enter the autumn term, it is an ideal time to teach children how germs spread.

“Staff can help raise children’s awareness of good hygiene practices by teaching them about the importance of hand washing, nose wiping and disposal of tissues, and the spread of infection through coughing and sneezing.”
