Have your say on Bangor plans

The next phase of major work to transform Bangor city centre is on the cards and people are invited to have their say on improvement plans.

A public exhibition of various plans drawn up for Bangor bus station and the surrounding area will be held in the empty unit next to Clinton Cards in the Deiniol Centre, Bangor on Friday and Saturday, 28-29 January between 11am and 4pm.

Some of the ideas and proposals which will be on display include installing new and more attractive passenger shelters; more accessible bus stands; improved public toilets; improved pedestrian crossings; changes to traffic flow; better and wider footways; facilities for cyclists and opening up of the Tan y Fynwent area.

The exhibition will also be an opportunity for people to see other aspects of some Bangor projects, including the university’s new Pontio arts and innovation centre, which is set to replace the old Theatr Gwynedd and Students Union facilities and will see links to the High Street extended over Deiniol Road.

This scheme goes hand in hand with the Bangor Public Realm Project, a multi million pound venture which will see Bangor city centre regenerated and rejuvenated to make it an attractive hub for north Wales.

Representatives from Gwynedd Council and Gifford consultants will be at the exhibition to answer questions and receive comments. All comments will be taken into consideration as the next phase of regeneration is realised.

Councillor Gareth Roberts, Gwynedd Council’s Environment portfolio leader, said: “This is a very exciting time for Bangor with several projects taking shape which I am confident will put the city on the map as a modern, vibrant, green place to live, work and visit.

“I would urge anyone who is interested in this project to call by the exhibition and give their opinions, so that together we can make our proud city even better.

“This is an important phase of the regeneration work as an improved bus station can encourage residents and visitors to use sustainable transport as an attractive and viable alternative to using the car for most journeys.”

The ideas and plans which will be on display are the result of a feasibility study conducted as part of the Môn a Menai Sustainable Travel Area – the first of its kind in Wales, aimed at giving residents and visitors a better choice of transport methods aimed at reducing congestion and lessening our impact on the environment.

Outline designs and ideas will also be available on the website, visit: www.gwynedd.gov.uk/BangorPublicRealm
