Wrexham Council is seeking residents views on Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMO’s). The council is launching a public consultation regarding its proposals to introduce additional licensing of HMO’s.
This will allow Wrexham Council to have greater authority to improve conditions within HMO’s, as well as making it a requirement for landlords to obtain a license for any HMO situated within the Borough.
Wrexham Council works with private landlords to ensure that all tenants are safe from the risk of fire and other potential hazards and that shared housing is of a high standard with regard to their general facilities, amenities and living conditions.
Licensing of HMO’s was introduced by the Government in 2004 and aims to ensure that HMOs are suitably equipped with amenities and facilities for the number of occupants living in them and to ensure they are effectively managed and do not cause a problem to neighbours.
Councillor Mark Pritchard, Lead Member for Housing and Planning, said:
“As an authority we have a duty to ensure that private rented properties are of a high and safe standard. This is an important consultation and HMO’s if poorly managed can become a hazard to those living in them and can have a detrimental effect on the surrounding areas. We are seeking the views of a wide range of people and want everyone, whether you are a tenant, landlord or a person living near an area that contains HMO’s, to have your say.”
The consultation will run until the 14th January 2011.
