Have your say on recycling

Swansea Residents are being given the chance to have their say on refuse collections and recycling in the city and win Swans tickets in the process.

Councillors on Swansea’s Environment and Communities Overview and Scrutiny Board are reviewing how well Swansea is managing to reduce waste and increase recycling and they want to know what the public thinks.

Residents can fill in an online survey about refuse collections and whether changes have or will help encourage more of them to recycle.

Cllr June Evans, Chair of the Board, said: “Reducing the amount of waste we produce and recycling as much as possible is a key priority of the Council.

“So we need to understand whether the recent changes to refuse collections have encouraged people in Swansea to recycle more.

“We want as many people as possible to complete the survey and this includes people who haven’t gone through the change yet so we can find out how they feel about it.”

To have a say and be in with a chance to win tickets to see Swansea City play at the Liberty Stadium residents should complete the survey by December 17.

The survey is available at www2.swansea.gov.uk/_snapforms/osr/rc/eng/recycling.htm

It’s the job of Overview and Scrutiny Boards to monitor the Council’s performance and suggest areas for improvement. Overview and Scrutiny Boards are made up of local Councillors.

In October Swansea Council introduced alternate weekly collections for residents who have their domestic waste picked up on a Thursday or Friday.

It means those residents have their waste collected every week but each week they must put out specific waste materials depending on what colour week they are on.

During the pink week, household rubbish in black bags, plastics and kitchen waste will be collected.

Then on the green week, kitchen waste and other recyclables like glass, cans, paper and cardboard and green waste in their containers will be collected.

The second phase will take place in April 2011 and be rolled out to the rest of Swansea. It will include people who have kerbside collections on Monday to Wednesday.
