Plaid Cymru AM Leanne Wood has received assurances that services at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant will not be downgraded.
The South Wales Central AM wrote to Allison Williams, chief executive of the Cwm Taf Health Board, after concerns about the future operation of the hospital were raised with her constituents following the temporary closure of the minor injury unit at Ysbyty Cwm Rhondda.
Leanne Wood said: “I know health boards face significant challenges given the financial situation so it’s good to learn that Cwm Taf has been able to rule out any downgrading of services at the Royal Glamorgan.”
Allison Williams said: “There have been many rumours following the temporary closure of the Minor Injury Unit at Ysbyty Cwm Rhondda. This action was taken to address short term medical staffing challenges in the A & E Department at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital. I am pleased therefore to have this opportunity to reassure both you and your constituents that there are no plans to downgrade the services provided at the Royal Glamorgan.
“You may be aware also that the Chairman and I recently attended our Rhondda Public Forum, to answer questions and allay fears. In responding to the rumours that had been circulating about the Royal Glamorgan Hospital Dr Jones made it clear that these were ‘complete nonsense’.
“You will, I know, be aware that all Health Boards in Wales are currently looking at a redesign of services and the workforce to provide safe, sustainable services as locally as possible for all our populations, and Cwm Taf is no different. However, in the meantime you can be reassured that we are constantly working with all stakeholders to look at how we make best use of the skills and people we have to meet the needs of our patients.”
