A great opportunity has arisen to have a go at the traditional craft of hedge laying at a local nature reserve in Rhyl.
Denbighshire Countryside Service is working in partnership with Keep Wales Tidy and Rhyl Environment Association to lay the boundary hedge at Brickfields’s Pond.
Hedges were traditionally laid as a stock-proof form of management that would also prolong the life and quality of the hedge. Our hedgerows act as a great habitat for nesting birds and this is one reason behind a resurgence of this traditional craft.
Jim Kilpatrick, Countryside Warden, said: “The benefits of laying a hedge are perfect for the edge of this local nature reserve. Not only will the hedges look attractive but will also become more appealing to our local birdlife. All of this will benefit the local community and we hope people will get involved”.
A professional trainer will be working alongside wardens at Brickfields Pond and various groups such as the Rhyl Environment Association, Skill Build students at Coleg Llandrillo Rhyl and Ysgol Tir Morfa during this week-long event.
Two days have been left open to anyone wishing to have a go- on Thursday and Friday, 15th and 16th of October. Meet at Brickfields Pond car park at 10a,m.
